Elisabeth Le Guin's Boccherini's Body: An Essay in Carnal Musicology is a rich intellectual and musical tapestry.

The Leopold String Trio are next in line, taking to the Hall Two stage on December 5, performing Boccherini's Trio in D, Op.14, No.4, Beethoven's Serenade for String Trio, Op.8, and works by Martinu and Taneyev.

There were a couple of intrusions into the Italian context, with the exhilarating flamenco energy of the fandango concluding Boccherini's D major Quintet, and the sinuous tango rhythms of Alec Roth's Papa H Dances, a brilliant encore.

Meanwhile, three enjoyable series continue to appear - the symphonies of Joseph Kraus from the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Boccherini quartets and Volume 2 of the music for violin and harp of Spohr, all delightful house music.

Knowing violinist Fabio Biondi and his Europa Galante ensemble from a number of previous recordings, I rather expected this outing of Boccherini string quintets to be extremely fast paced and perhaps lacking in charm.

An exception to this mild admonishment is the playing of Anner Bylsma on Boccherini: Sonatas for violoncello and basso continuo; fugues for two violoncellos (Sony Classical SK 53 362, rec 1992).
