stayRemain and stay are often used with the same meaning. Remain is more formal than stay. To remain or stay in a particular state means to continue to be in that state.
Oliver remained silent.

If you remain or stay in a place, you do not leave it.

If something still exists, you can say that it remains. Don't say that it 'stays'.
