His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah meets peace activists KUWAIT, July 3 (KUNA) -- His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah received on Tuesday at Bayan Palace an organization of senior peace activists known as "The Elders." The group is comprised of renowned personalities including former Algerian Foreign Minister Lakhdar Brahimi and erstwhile president of Finland Martti Ahtisaari. "The Elders" is an international, non-governmental organization of elder statesmen, peace activists and human rights advocates, who were brought together by Nelson Mandela in 2007.

The delegation includes former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari, former President of Mexico Ernesto Zedillo, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Algeria Lakhdar Brahimi and Chief Executive Officer of the Elders Group David Nussbaum.

Former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari told British daily The Guardian in comments confirmed to Agence France Presse that Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, met with him privately in 2012 and suggested finding "an elegant way for Assad to step aside".

On Tuesday, Nobel peace prize laureate Martti Ahtisaari told The Guardian that in 2012 Moscow suggested a reconciliation deal for Syria, suggesting to "find an elegant way for Assad to step aside" after launching peace talks between the Syrian government and opposition, RIA Novosti reported.
