In 2017, we processed 39 birds: 11 American robins (Turdus migratorius), 1 common yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas), 20 gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis), 2 house wrens (Troglodytes aedon), 1 indigo bunting (
Passerina cyanea), 3 northern cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis), and 1 American yellow warbler (Setophaga petechia).
We monitored 997 active nests of eight species with sufficient sample sizes to fit nest survival models including 73 Acadian flycatcher (Empidonax virescens, [n.sub.eff] = 1276), 172 bluegray gnatcatcher (Polioptila caerulea, [n.sub.eff] = 1980), 256 Eastern wood-pewee (Contofms virens, [n.sub.eff] = 5344), 72 field sparrow (Spizella pusilla, [n.sub.eff] = 608), 207 indigo bunting (
Passerina cyanea, [n.sub.eff] = 2206), 47 prairie warbler (Setophaga discolor, [n.sub.eff] = 504), 66 summer tanager (Piranga rubra, [n.sub.eff] = 893), and 102 yellow-breasted chat (Icteria virens, [n.sub.eff] = 1021) nests.
The most common species of birds were tufted titmice (Baeolophus bicolor; average of 1.69 individuals/count), indigo buntings (
Passerina cyanea; 1.20), and red-eyed vireos (Vireo olivaceus; 0.64).
Other species widely held in early American homes included Baltimore orioles (Icterus galbula), bobolinks (Dolichonyx oryzivorus), rose-breasted grosbeaks (Pheucticus ludovicianus), eastern bluebirds (Sialia sialis), indigo buntings (
Passerina cyanea), gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis), purple finches (Carpodacus purpureus), "black caps" or black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapilla), and red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus).
Whereas, stands embedded within agriculture supported particularly high numbers of more open, edge-dwelling species such as the field sparrow (Spizella pusilla), eastern towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus), and indigo bunting (
Passerina cyanea), adding edge-associated species to the regrowth parches.
For instance, most nests found on the State Game Lands (SGL) 33 ROW in 1991-92 were those of early successional species, including field sparrow (Spizella pusilla), gray catbird (Dumetella carolinensis), eastern towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus), common yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas), and indigo bunting (
Passerina cyanea) (Bramble et al.
