(dŏm′ə-nē′kə, də-mĭn′ĭ-kə) An island country of the eastern Caribbean between Guadeloupe and Martinique. Originally inhabited by Caribs, the island was visited by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and became a British colony in the early 1800s, gaining its independence in 1978. Roseau is the capital.
