NPS (https://nps.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/b526c87ae21f4a669eb6c9238c2c4bcf) statistics show that in 2017 there were approximately 324 searches and rescues conducted in national parks in or adjacent to the Utah area, with 35 incidents in
Canyonlands National Park. There were three reported deaths in the area.
The Green River, which has deeper history with noted exploration first by John Wesley Powell in 1869, meets the Colorado River at the Confluence in
Canyonlands National Park. The Green River delivers rafting and canoeing trips.
It passes through the red rocks of Utah, carving dramatic landscapes such as Arches and
Canyonlands National Parks, and surges onward through the Grand Canyon.

Green groups fear that once mining starts near the Grand Canyon, similar destructive plans will also get the green light in and around other protected areas, including Arches National Park, Capitol Reef National Park,
Canyonlands National Park and the proposed Dolores River Canyon wilderness area.

In New Mexico, a Navajo activist group is challenging in federal court a license issued just over the reservation's eastern border.Uranium claims are also encroaching on stretches of Western parkland such as Arches National Park, Capitol Reef National Park and
Canyonlands National Park, all in Utah, as well as a proposed wilderness area in Colorado called the Dolores River Canyon.But by far the most claims staked near any national park are in the vicinity of the Grand Canyon, which draws 5 million people a year.
Luckily, Martin and I discover the friendly little hospital where they're used to dealing with such issues, but I can't help worrying a little when I think that for the following four days the group will be much further afield, riding and camping along the remote White Rim Trail in
Canyonlands National Park.
Arches National Park is five miles north, and
Canyonlands National Park, site of many multiday rides, is 50 miles southwest.

In the United States, one such herd roamed what in 1964 became
