(fō′lĭk, fŏl′ĭk) A vitamin belonging to the vitamin B complex that is important in cell growth and metabolism. It is found especially in green leafy vegetables and fresh fruit. Lack of folic acid can cause anemia because it is necessary for the formation of red blood cells.
