Supercluster of galaxies, which extends perhaps 300 million light-years from the Milky Way.
Sir John's discoveries included a rich collection of "nebulae," now known as the Hydra-Centaurus
Supercluster, which spans the constellations Antlia, Hydra, and Centaurus.
In 1986, a group of scientists found evidence that above and beyond this motion, the Milky Way and many other galaxies and galaxy clusters move toward a distant
supercluster in the constellations of Hydra and Centaurus.
In the late 1970s, large-scale redshift surveys revealed that clusters of galaxies are often linked together in chains to form enormous
superclusters. Our Local Group resides in the outskirts of the Local
Supercluster, first identified in the early 1950s by Gerard de Vaucouleurs, which has the Virgo Cluster as its core.
"So far, the pencil-beam surveys and
supercluster catalogs fit together very well."
Because the probability of finding so many matching absorption regions by chance is small, a number of astronomers concluded that the two lines of sight intercept a single
supercluster of galaxies at least 15 million light-years across and 45 million light-years deep.
