The muscle density facilitates dissection of the
palatine tonsil in the subcapsular plane.
However, these cysts may present anywhere along the course of a second branchial fistula, which proceeds from the skin of the lateral neck, between the internal and external carotid arteries, and into the
palatine tonsil. Therefore, a second branchial cleft cyst in part of the differential diagnosis of a parapharyngeal mass.

Squamous cell carcinoma of the
palatine tonsil is often evident clinically as a visible oropharyngeal mass that is sometimes detected on routine examination.

On physical examination, a 1 x 1.5-cm cystic mass was observed in the upper pole of the left
palatine tonsil (figure 1).
Computed tomography-positron emission tomography (CT-PET) with diagnostic CT of the neck demonstrated that the right
palatine tonsil lesion had filled the tonsillar-lingual sulcus, extended to the level of the soft palate, and crossed the midline; the standard uptake value (SUV) of the mass was 56.
The majority of tonsillectomies carried out during the last half of the 20th century were performed with the "cold knife" technique; that is, by employing a Dean or Fisher knife and tonsil snare to remove the
palatine tonsil from its fossa.

Although the head and neck region is a common location for benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors, neurofibromas of the oral cavity, pharynx, and
palatine tonsil are extremely rare.
A 23-year-old woman presented with a 3-year history of a slowly growing mass in the left
palatine tonsil. On examination of her throat, we found that the left tonsil was unusually large.
