The patient remembered how tremendously lost he had felt when he was alone on the farm of the distant relatives where he had been sent, where he knew nobody, where he was alone most of the day because they were out harvesting and he was too little yet to be taken along .During the periods on the farm when he felt so upset and alone, he put all his possessions together in a little spot and counted them and looked at them and became obsessionally involved with them.
As his therapy progressed, however, Beckett began "forcing [himself] to keep at the book" (Feshenfeld 22 September 1935), and soon "threw himself obsessionally into [it], at the expense of almost everything else" (Knowlson 194).
This reached a severe level of obsessionally looking at women on the train while going to work which triggered an internal process of questioning himself repeatedly.
