Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), formerly called
lupoid hepatitis, is a chronic, autoimmune disease of the liver that occurs when the body's immune system attacks liver cells causing the liver to be inflamed.
It was first described in the 1950s and has been known throughout the decades by various names, including chronic active hepatitis, chronic aggressive hepatitis,
lupoid hepatitis, plasma cell hepatitis, and autoimmune chronic active hepatitis.
