Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko allegedly pocketed up to Sh20 million from a lucrative
garbage collection contract that now threatens to end his nine-year political career.
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is expected to appear before anti-graft agency detectives on Tuesday to record statements on the award of tenders for
garbage collection and disposal in the county.The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating claims of corruption in the award of tenders for the 2017/18 and 2018/19 financial years.
He cited that last month CS took notice of terrible situation of garbage in Karachi and ordered Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB)to scrap contract of a company which failed to fulfill responsibilities regarding
garbage collection and dumping
In all sectors
garbage collection from homes and street cleaning done earlier by DMA staff was abruptly stopped on lame excuses by the new MCI set-up and instead people were forced to buy expensive wheeled
garbage collection drums and asked to put them daily outside so that
garbage collection could be made.
While the board has improved
garbage collection and disposal to some extent in some areas, political and administrative hurdles have so far kept it from undertaking all its responsibilities.
The City Government eyes a 100% coverage of
garbage collection within a 10-year period starting next year.
As a result, the contradictions between the two sides only led to the aggravation of the
