Racist theorising, especially from the latter part of the nineteenth century when Social Darwinism became popular, often anticipated the dying out of "the savage." This further encouraged violence against indigenes and fostered an extirpatory attitude within frontier society as their demise was seen as inevitable, the outcome of an inexorable law of nature of the fit supplanting the unfit.
