To calculate the value of any termination benefit from share-based payments, (140) we used the details in Table 3, (141) along with share prices of the sample companies at the date of grant and on 1 March 2006, to arrive at a figure for such payments.
The entity notifies the employees that they will be terminated in 90 days, and each employee will receive a cash payment of $6,000 as a termination benefit (which will be paid at the date an employee ceases rendering service during the 90-day period).
It was shown in part I of this article that retirement benefits may consist of many different benefits: 1) The termination benefit, which is a minimum amount that must be provided at termination, and which is the only benefit subject to vesting; 2) early retirement benefits; 3) normal retirement benefits; 4) early retirement subsidies; 5) post-retirement subsidized survivor benefits; 6) post-retirement health benefits; and 7) every optional form of benefit offered by the plan.

Many things distinguish retirement benefits from termination benefits. The first and foremost distinction is that vested termination benefits are received at a normal retirement date,(11) whereas retirement benefits can be received at an earlier date, called the early retirement date, when certain age and service requirements have been satisfied at the date of separation.(12) The amount payable may be reduced to reflect the extra number of years that it will be received by the employee.(13) It also may be subsidized for earlier than normal retirement.(14) This means that the benefit has greater value at the early retirement date.(15) Subsidized benefits are extra benefits paid in addition to the termination benefit amount.
