This case study is an opportunity for the author to show how conflicting interests and visions of the urban modernity shaped a specific project of great dimensions that was to radically transform Izmir's outlook and provide a new backdrop for the Smyrniots to experience and enact the mid-nineteenth century transformations in urban sociability.
