Pole telephone

A name sometimes applied to the telephone most commonly used before the introduction of the dial phone. The pole phone had a flat circular base a few inches in diameter supporting a vertical cylindrical column an inch or so in diameter and about a foot high. At the top of the column was a microphone, and hanging on the side of the column was the earpiece.
