Shortleaf pine (
Pinus echinata), Missouri's only native pine species, has a long history of economic and ecological value to the state.
The southern pine group consists of loblolly (Pinus taeda), longleaf (Pinus palustris), shortleaf (
Pinus echinata), and slash (Pinus elliottii).
We identified stands that contained mostly shortleaf (
Pinus echinata Mill.) and/or loblolly pine (P taeda L.) (Pinales: Pinaceae).
Some tree species exhibited the highest seed germination rate in the middle age, such as Sorbus torminalis [14] and
Pinus echinata [15].
In the tree stratum, dominant species were Quercus prinus,
Pinus echinata, Pinus virginiana, Quercus velutina, and Oxydendrum arboreum.

The primary species known as southern yellow pine include Pinus palustris,
Pinus echinata, Pinus taeda and Pinus elliottii of the Family Pinaceae.
Dominant woody species were Oxydendrum arboreum (L.) DC., Quercus alba L., and
Pinus echinata Miller.
Historically, the forests of the Ozark Current River Hills had a large shortleaf pine (
Pinus echinata) component.
The surrounding woods are primarily composed of shortleaf pine (
Pinus echinata), loblolly pine (Pinus taeda), southern red oak (Quercus falcata), blackjack oak (Quercus marilandica) and winged elm (Ulmus alata) along with sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua), black hickory (Carya texana), American holly (flex opaca), sugar hackberry (Celtis laevigata) and red cedar (Juniperus virginiana).
