While the pallet bundling process through shrink wrapping often takes approximately one minute, an employee takes just a second to apply a rubber or silicon band to unitize a pallet load.
Making things more difficult is the fact that carriers often are discouraged or prohibited from breaking plastic film and other materials used to unitize pallets in order to verify the measurements and weights of individual articles.
With sustainability on the mind of consumers and manufacturers, less and less packaging is being used to protect products during shipping and handling--making them far more fragile and challenging to unitize (think shrink-wrapped bundles with no corrugated tray underneath).
"With a typical load using a half-pound of stretch film, and costing $0.50 to $0.75 to unitize, saving a few cents per load adds up quickly," Vilardi explains.
