The combed bundle of fibers is called a
rolag. Have them gently stretch a few fibers out from the end of the
rolag and twist them between their thumb and forefinger.
My first meeting unfolded a feedbag of new terms such as S-twist and Z-twist; roving,
rolag, and sliver; Lazy Kates and Niddy Noddies.
For nice, clean, single-coated fleeces, hand cards can be used to make
rolags, or a drum carder can be used for making roving or batts.
To ready the tow for spinning, I carded it using dog brushes, making
rolags the same as I had done in class for wool.
