It focuses on six disciplines that have informed approaches to the study of interpreting and sign language interpreting: history, translation, linguistics, sociology and anthropology, social psychology, and
cognitive psychology. It discusses the discipline of interpreting studies, including what a discipline is and its key concepts; the six disciplines, including their background, major theoretical ideas, scholars who have contributed to interpreting studies, and issues and concerns of interpreting that have been studied; and the ways each discipline might research a major topic in sign language interpreting.
Our own research sits in the field of cognitive science or, more specifically,
cognitive psychology. The word cognition comes from the Latin word for "to know," and cognition refers to "behind-the-scenes" behaviors like perceiving, attending, remembering, thinking, and decision making.
