The substitution of calcium by REE's is frequent in apatite, titanite,
allanite, feldspars, among others.

The rocks comprise plagioclase, perthite, quartz, and small amounts of biotite, opaque oxide, titanite, rare
allanite, and secondary chlorite (after biotite), leucoxene and epidote.
The energy spectra for a large number of NORM samples were measured, including: slate, cat litter, ice melt, roofing tiles, hay, coal, fertilizer, Australian zircon sand, diammonium phosphate (DAP), ISG Pye, CEMEX type FC, monocalcium phosphate (biofos),
allanite, monazite, pyrochlore and zircon.
The results to date have indicated that the light rare earths (LREE) in the Nechalacho deposit are contained in four minerals:
allanite, monazite, bastnaesite and synchisite, and the heavy rare earths (HREE) are present in two minerals: fergusonite and zircon, the latter also being host to zirconium (Zr).
Mineralogical work completed by the company indicated that a wide variety of rare-earth element-bearing minerals have been identified, including apatite, iimoriite, kainosite, gadolinite,
allanite, bastnaesite, parisite, brannerite, thalenite, xenotime, fergusonite, synchysite (Y), and monazite.
Other minerals found in the Kafubu emerald area include
allanite (small euhedral crystals in rock), amethystine quartz (in a single 10-cm-wide vein), bertrandite (7-mm crystal aggregates replacing beryl), columbite-(Mn), tantalite-(Mn) (prismatic euhedral microcrystals), monazite (euhedral microcrystals), epidote, gahnite, phenakite (crystals to 1 cm enclosed in beryl), plumbomicrolite (brownish yellow crystals to 1 mm), and xenotime (euhedral micro-crystal inclusions) (Seifert et al., 2004).
The groundmass is composed of quartz, feldspar, devitrified glass, minor magnetite, ilmenite, pyrite, rare galena, fluorite and accessory minerals similar to those in trachyte samples (i.e., microlites of zircon, apatite, monazite, and
allanite).
