Created by the French artists Zim&Zou, they help bring to life Gabriel GarcE[degrees]a MEirquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude" and Sigrid Undset's "Kristin Lavransdatter." The latter was treated as a landscape by the artists, with Trondheim's
Nidaros Cathedral at the center.
King Harald is said to have described it as the country's biggest cultural event since the completion of the Romanesque-meets-Gothic
Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim--and that was in 1300.
Materials related to "Air Attack: A Danger to Our Cultural Heritage," a 1989 exhibition in Trondheim about the effects of acid rain and the spread of airborne radioactivity after the Chernobyl disaster--erroneously blamed for destroying the facade of the city's
Nidaros Cathedral--were displayed in glass vitrines to reconstruct the indelible impression it made on the young artist.
At the same time, monasteries from
Nidaros to Solovki moved into the region, in part after souls, but equally after the furs and fish that provided local sustenance and increasingly export earnings as well.
This is a collection of legends about the Norwegian King Olaf II Haraldsson (995-1030), which was extended and updated by the archbishop of
Nidaros Eysteinn Erlendsson (1161-1188) and his team around 1180.
The city's most famous landmark is the
Nidaros cathedral - allegedly the inspiration for Anna and Elsa's castle in Frozen, although the similarity is tough to spot.
Together with colleagues and the hosting bishops, the Preses of the Bishops' Conference and the Bishop of
Nidaros, and the general secretary for the Council for Ecumenical Relations of the Church of Norway, I visited Trondheim in January to discuss the cooperation and make decisions about facilities.
Founded over 1,000 years ago, Trondheim is packed with interesting sights, from the Gothic-style
Nidaros Cathedral to an eclectic choice of museums.
The focus is on the
Nidaros Church and its province, which stretched from Norway to Sweden, Denmark, Britain, Iceland, and Greenland.
As well as overlooking a stunning harbour, the city boasts both a state-of-the-art national museum of rock and pop music called Rockheim, and the truly impressive
Nidaros Cathedral, the Gothic style of which is almost identical to the famous West Front of Wells Cathedral in Somerset.
