Flickeringly

It is observable that the cities like New Atlantis, Utopia, the City of the Sun, Oceana, Tamoe, New Harmony, New Lanark and Icaria keep on eluding Kublai, Marco and the readers as murky, unstable and tantalizing presences flickeringly appearing across the hazy spatio-temporal milieu of Marco's journey.

But they pale beside the radical difference presented by Q1--barely half the length of either of them, the order of scenes different in places (and one scene not present in either of the other versions), two characters with different names, and the language only flickeringly resembling "the received version," as Lesser commonly denotes the familiar text, a conflation of Q2 and F1.

In Deronda, however, Daniel is pledged from here out to reside at the heart of Mordecai's own absence, a perpetual dislodging caught and flickeringly carried by the latter's expiring words.
