ther·mom·e·ter
(thər-mŏm′ĭ-tər) An instrument used to measure temperature. There are many types of thermometers, each of which makes use of a physical effect of temperature to indicate the temperature of the medium being measured. The most common thermometer consists of a closed, graduated glass tube in which a liquid expands or contracts as the temperature increases or decreases. Other types of thermometers work by detecting changes in the volume of an enclosed gas or by registering changes in the electrical resistance of a conducting material at different temperatures.
