Candlemas Day

Also known as Candlemas Day, many Catholic churches will hold the traditional procession of blessed candles to remind the faithful that "Jesus is the Light of the world, who, by His birth, saved the human race from eternal damnation and expelled the darkness of evil and death."

And of course there is more folklore connected with Candlemas Day (2nd) If Candlemas Day be fair and bright Winter will have another fight If Candlemas Day brings cloud and rain Winter won't come again Another rhyme tells us, 'If the cat sits in the sun in February, he will sit by the stove in March,' and another - 'The Welshman would rather see his dam on her bier, than see a fair Februeer'.

Candlemas Day THIS is old Candlemas Day, [February 2, 1918] the day on which the fate of the weather for the remainder of the year is supposed to hang.

Until the 19th century though, people would keep their decorations up until Candlemas Day on February 2.

It starts with Groundhog Day and Candlemas Day and ends with 11 hours, 11 minutes of day length.

A week last Sunday was 40 days after Christmas and marked as Candlemas Day. Soon we'll count 40 days to prepare us for Easter.

The 13th century equivalent of the Boundary Commission met close to the disputed ground at Wynds Point on Candlemas Day 1278.
