The A'chik dialects belong to the Bodo linguistic family of Tibeto-Burman languages while the Khasi dialect is an offshoot of the Mon-Khmer linguistic group of the Austro-Asiatic language family.
As part of this project, it was decided to prepare a volume of surveys, all adhering to a predetermined common format, each concerning anaphora in a selected Indo-Aryan, Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman, or Austro-Asiatic language. The surveys were to be written in such a way as to facilitate comparison of anaphoric phenomena both within and across the language families of South Asia.
The eastern zone comprises of the eastern and northeastern regions where the Austro-Asiatic languages are spoken.
