Inasmuch as Rashi had only daughters, and his sons-in-law and many of his grandsons were scholars (the tosaphists such as Joheved's sons: Rabbi Isaac ben Meir [Ribam], Rabbi Samuel ben Meir [Rashbam] and Rabbi Jacob ben Meir [Rabbeinu Tam]), the question as to what extent Rashi diverged, in his household, from the traditional attitude that discouraged women's education sustains the drama of the novel.
