Well I was just a
rouseabout coming from St George and I didn't know about it.
Probably about 12 years old when first employed in 1868, the lad earned 10.17s.6d [pounds sterling] in the first year, 29.11s.3d [pounds sterling] in the next, 54.15s.0d [pounds sterling] in 1870 and 16.0s.0d [pounds sterling] in 1871 for his work at lambing time, as a
rouseabout in the shearing shed, and as a drover and general labourer.
By the time he was 12 years of age he was working as a
rouseabout. Through his brother, Val, he met Xavier Herbert who sowed the idea that people of mixed descent might form a body to campaign for their rights as citizens.

He found work as a
rouseabout (general hand) and labourer in rural New South Wales, particularly around Forbes, Cowra, and the western districts, where he worked mainly in the wool industry.
The
rouseabout, vagabond country teenager and the brittle, remote Sydney matron (who could themselves be mother and daughter), will create a "new kind of family." The script suggests that money can alter the relationship between the two women, turning them from hostile rivals to affectionate partners in an extended three-generational family bond, but it cannot obviate the 'natural' irrevocable bond between mother and child which must be respected.
