mag·ne·to·stric·tion

 (măg-nē′tō-strĭk′shən)
n.
Deformation of a material, especially a ferromagnetic material, exposed to a magnetic field. Rapidly alternating magnetostriction causes the iron cores of transformers to hum or buzz.
