The chain from the chainring goes down to a
layshaft, mounted ahead of the pedals, which has a gear ratio of about 2:1.
Sponsored by David Brown Gears, his final year project was the design a twin
layshaft waggon gearbox - only for the company to pull out of that product sector.
Mr D Clayton, via email A From your description this could be a variety of problems from worn gearbox
layshaft bearings to wheel or even drive shaft bearings.
The gearbox ratios were modified to allow a single-stage drive to both sides of the rear wheel, rather than using a
layshaft as originally envisaged.
The compact size and high input torque capacity of up to 600Nm and the ratio flexibility given by the
layshaft principle allows the gears to perfectly adapt to the engine characteristics.
This automatically matches the input and gearbox
layshaft speeds for seamless zero torque interruption shifts.
The WG transmission features a
layshaft design, with the shafts positioned one below the other.
In place of the traditional
layshaft operating a bank of cam-driven switches to control machine motions, the GBE Lerner-Burgess machine uses a solid state timer and rotary encoder to provide keypad set-up, accurate to within 0.5 [degrees] of arc.
Certainly one element that helps is that much of the core mechanical components and systems of our PowerShift products are derived directly from
layshaft gearing and synchronizers found in traditional manual transmissions.
