A style of twentieth-century popular music that developed in the United States out of the folk music of the rural southeast, with its Scottish and Irish folk music influences, and western, cowboy-style music. The form was also influenced by black musical styles such as the blues, and has become widely popular outside the United States. Also known as country music or C & W.
