But in Walker's desire to contemporize the play, this Blanche appears dragging an ugly modern case on wheels, and the old woman is coarsened (like so much else in this production) into a young man with Rio carnival skull make-up on half of his face, who then follows Blanche into the apartment, which is a total nonsense and vulgarises a heart-stopping moment, turning a suggestion into a shriek.
