1. Any of several large rats of the genera Bandicota and Nesokia of Asia and the Middle East, which inhabit cultivated lands and are destructive to crops.
2. Any of several nocturnal marsupials of the family Peramelidae, of New Guinea, Australia, and adjacent islands, which feed on insects and plants and have a long, tapering snout and a pouch that opens toward the rear.
[Telugu pandikokku (literally "pig-rat," in reference to the piglike grunts made by Bandicota bengalensis when threatened) : pandi, pig, hog; akin to Malayalam panni + kokku, rat, bandicoot.]
