Yac´a`re`

    (yăk´å`rā`)
n.1.(Zool.) A South American crocodilian (Jacare sclerops) resembling the alligator in size and habits. The eye orbits are connected together, and surrounded by prominent bony ridges. Called also spectacled alligator, and spectacled cayman.

The Broad-snouted Caiman has a wide latitudinal distribution in South America (between 5[degrees]S and 32[degrees]S; Filogonio et al., 2010; Verdade et al., 2010), with the southernmost distribution occurring in Santa Fe province, Argentina (31[degrees]S; Simoncini et al., 2009), where populations have been under management by "Proyecto Yacare" since 1990 (Larriera, 1990).
