Thomas Sully

Famed New Orleans architect Thomas Sully designed the Queen Anne-style home for local merchant Thomas Picard and his family in 1889.

In 1821, in gratitude to their founder, the faculty and cadets of West Point commissioned the artist Thomas Sully to paint a portrait of Jefferson to hang in the academy.

Built in 1893 by acclaimed local architect, Thomas Sully, this quaint and elegant property is currently run by New Orleans native, Bonnie Rabe, who extends a warm welcome to all who spend a night or two here.

The son of painter Thomas Sully of Philadelphia, one of the nation's leading portraitists, he entered West Point in 1837 at the age of sixteen, hoping to put his creative talents to constructive use as a draftsman and engineer.

Thoroughly researched information on a topic of importance to conservators and yet relatively neglected, this study offer analysis of materials and techniques used by painters including Benjamin West, Gilbert Stuart, Washington Allston, Thomas Sully, Thomas Cole, and William Sidney Mount, among others.

Masterpieces such as Thomas Sully's massive and rarely shown oil, The Passage of the Delaware (1819), which depicts George Washington on a white horse at the turning point of the American Revolution, have been brought out of storage and proudly displayed.
