The French naturalists have considered the black variety a distinct species, and called it
Lepus Magellanicus.
"It would be a dangerous volcanic world with a molten surface of lava, a lunar version of close-in Super Earths like 55 Cancri-e" says Apurva Oza, postdoctoral fellow at the Physics Insitute of the University of Bern and associate of the NCCR PlanetS, "a place where Jedis go to die, perilously familiar to Anakin Skywalker." But the object that Oza and his colleagues describe in their work seems to be even more exotic than Star Wars science fiction: the possible exomoon would orbit a hot giant planet, which in turn would race once around its host star in less than three days -- a scenario 550 light years away in the inconspicuous constellation of
Lepus, underneath the bright Orion constellation.

Hares (family Leporidae, genus
Lepus), although genetically related, are physically larger and are primarily hunted as food in large parts of Europe (>5 million hares annually) (4).
Fishers are generalist predators (Powell, 1993), whose common prey on our study site included porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum), ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus), eastern cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus), snowshoe hares (
Lepus americanas), red (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensi), and carrion of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus; (Kirby et al, 2018) or roadkill (Powell, 1993).
It is not allowed to kill wild animals in Nepal (HMG, 1973), however, we recorded hunting and selling of Indian Hares (
Lepus nigricollis) for bush meat frequently in Janakpur (Figure 3a), hunting of Barking Deer (Muntiacus vaginalis) and Masked Palm Civets (Paguma larvata) at Ghorlikharka, Dhankuta.
Snowshoe Hares (
Lepus americanas) are a keystone species of the boreal forest that experience population cycles occurring over 10-y periods (Krebs and others 2001).
Speaking of films, while Ambrose is on a date at a cafe, a 1972 "Night of the
Lepus" poster can be seen on the wall.
The reported species are Naemorhedus goral, Panthera pardus, Sus scrofa,
Lepus nigricollis, Macaca mulatta, Canis aureus, Vulpes vulpes, Myotis myotis, Herpestes edwardsii and Hystrix indica.
The Tehuantepec jackrabbit,
Lepus flavigularis (Wagner, 1844), is a endemic species to Oaxaca, Mexico, whose distribution has been reduced to only four isolated populations with less than 1 000 individuals; so that has been listed as an endangered species (Lorenzo, Cervantes, Barragan, & Vargas, 2006; Smith, 2008; IUCN 2015; Lorenzo, Rioja-Paradela, & Carrillo-Reyes, 2015).
The snowshoe hare (
Lepus americanus) is a keystone prey species of the boreal forest (Krebs, 2011) and experiences regular population cycles that occur over 10-year periods (Krebs et al., 2001).
On a cold winter's evening rich with brilliant stars, dim
Lepus, the Hare, shyly crouches beneath Orion, hoping to be overlooked by the mighty hunter.
