DAME Joan Sutherland, one of the most acclaimed sopranos of the 20th century, has died aged 83.

TRIBUTES were paid yesterday to one of the towering figures of 20th century opera, Dame Joan Sutherland, a stalwart of the Royal Opera House, who has died at the age of 83.

Australian soprano Dame Joan Sutherland, who often sang with Pavarotti, said of the great tenor's voice: "Itwas incredible to stand next to it and sing along with it."
