(bō-ē′thē-əs), Anicius Manlius Severinus ad 480?-524? Roman philosopher and mathematician. Imprisoned on charges of treason, he wrote his greatest work, The Consolation of Philosophy, an investigation of destiny and free will, while awaiting his execution.
