(ăng′kər-ə, äng′-) Formerly An·cy·ra (ăn-sī′rə) and An·go·ra (ăng-gôr′ə, ăng′gər-ə) The capital of Turkey, in the west-central part of the country. An important commercial center from ancient times until the late 19th century, the city declined until it replaced Istanbul as the capital in 1923.
