The discovery was made 400 meters (440 yards) south of the King Seti I Temple in Abydos city that is close to the more famous Luxor.

It is thought Philae bounced when it first touched the comet and flew for two hours before landing at an area called Abydos on the comet's "smaller lobe".

The nearby city of Abydos is also considered one of the most attractive touristic locations in the country due a number of old relics and historical sites.
