ANDY WARHOL SCREEN TESTS: THE FILMS OF ANDY WARHOL CATALOGUE RAISONNE, VOL.
The films he shot with it and with the sound camera he acquired late in 1964 are, as Callie Angell writes in her introduction to Andy Warhol Screen Tests, "finally receiving long-overdue recognition as one of his greatest accomplishments." Warhol ended his stint as a hands-on filmmaker in 1968 with Blue Movie, and, shortly thereafter, his films were de facto withdrawn from distribution, leaving available only those "Andy Warhol productions" directed by Paul Morrissey.
Ricky persuaded the production company to come up to Liverpool to hold auditions, and a group of aspiring actors were chosen to take part in screen tests.
And to help them on their way, Ricky's brother Dave even loaned them a mini bus to go down to London for a screen test for roles in the new show.
The show reveals screen tests of Tom Selleck, Keanu Reeves, Sarah Michelle Geller and Bette Midler.
Paul also shows the screen test which clinched Henry Thomas the role of Elliott in movie blockbuster ET.
Fashioned during one of the protracted cold war's wary phases, the screen tests are oblique commentaries on what Avital Ronell has called, in another context, the "rhetoric of testing": Parodies of nuclear-defense tests, Warhol's screen tests interrogate what it means to be a good, tractable visible citizen.
The show reveals previously unseen footage, including screen tests of Tom Selleck ?
